Now What Does a Nobel Mean?

by Britt on October 9, 2009

Much will be written about President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize win. I’m not negative about the win, but baffled. If I’ve done the math right, he was in office less than two weeks when he was nominated. He received the award after being in office less than a year.

He has accomplished much given his age, but has he really accomplished what one must to receive this level of recognition? Does his award decrease the value of past award winners?

Does Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland have it right when he says, “We hope this can contribute a little bit to enhance what he is trying to do.”?

In this instance, I’m left to conclude that words carry as much weight as action. For once, I’m not sure that words are enough.
